What Are Fungal Nail Infections?
Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) typically occur when a fungus called Trichophyton rubrum—the same culprit behind Athlete’s Foot—spreads to the nail bed. While our skin has natural defences, warm and moist environments can allow the fungus to take hold. It is a common condition, affecting roughly one in four adults under 70, and up to half of those over 70.

What to Expect at Your Assessment
We want your visit to be the most relaxed part of your day. We take the time to ensure your treatment plan fits your life perfectly.
- Assessment
We begin with a medical history and basic vascular, neurological, and dermatological checks.
2. The 5-Minute Test
We perform a DTS microbiology test — currently the most accurate diagnostic test available, with a 97% accuracy rate — to confirm the presence of fungus before any treatment begins.
3. Your Personal Plan
We determine the severity — mild, moderate, or severe — and outline exactly how many sessions you will need for a clear result.
Our 3-Step Combination Treatment
Medical evidence published by the British Association of Dermatologists confirms that combination therapies are significantly more effective than any single treatment. We attack the infection from three angles simultaneously — internally, externally, and at a cellular level.
1
Lunula Laser
This state-of-the-art, non-thermal laser uses two specific wavelengths to clear the infection without pain or heat. The violet light attacks the fungus directly by breaking down its cell walls, while the red light boosts your immune response and increases blood flow to the nail bed to speed up healthy regrowth.
2
Antifungal Tablets
We use Terbinafine, a highly effective antifungal agent. It works from the inside out, accumulating in the nail protein to kill the fungus and prevent it from reproducing.
3
Topical Solution
We provide Excilor. This solution lowers the pH of the nail, creating an acidic environment where fungus cannot survive, while supporting nail repair and healthy regrowth.
~95% Success Rate: The Best Treatment for Fungal Nails
Medical evidence suggests that attacking a fungal infection from multiple angles is significantly more effective than any single therapy. We combine three clinical elements to eradicate the infection.
Treatment | Success Rate |
Topical Creams & Paints | 15% – 30% |
Fungal Nail Tablets (Oral) | ~50% |
Standard Laser Alone | ~65% |
Hartland Combination Therapy | ~95% |

Fungal Nail Treatment FAQs
Yes. The Lunula laser is non-thermal and painless, though some patients feel a slight tingling. Terbinafine is well-tolerated by the vast majority of patients — the most common side effects are mild gastrointestinal or skin reactions, which typically settle within one to two weeks. Serious adverse events are very rare. Excilor should be applied to nails only, as repeated contact with skin may cause minor irritation. We will discuss your suitability in detail during your assessment.
Medical evidence suggests that combination therapies are the most effective. By using the Lunula laser alongside antifungal tablets and topical solutions, we achieve a success rate of approximately 95% — even on the most severe and longstanding infections.
This depends on the severity of your infection. As a guide: mild infections typically require four sessions, moderate infections six sessions, and severe infections eight sessions. Your first two laser sessions are one week apart; remaining sessions are monthly. We will confirm your exact plan at your initial assessment.
The vast majority of patients can. The treatment is suitable for adults and children, and for both toenail and fingernail infections. During your assessment, we will carry out a thorough medical review to confirm suitability. In some cases — such as severe liver or kidney disease, significant circulatory problems, or certain medications — treatment may need to be modified or is not suitable. We will cover this fully at your appointment.
We use the Dermatophyte Test Strip (DTS) system, which has a 97% accuracy rate — currently the most accurate diagnostic test available. You receive your result within five minutes. This is important because several other conditions can look like a fungal infection, including psoriasis, old injuries, or repeated use of nail varnish, so a confirmed diagnosis ensures you receive the right treatment.
At Hartland, we provide transparent pricing. Your initial assessment is £90, and the diagnostic test is £60. Laser sessions start from £150 per treatment for one foot or hand, rising to £300 for both feet and both hands. You will require between four and eight sessions depending on severity. A review appointment including a repeat diagnostic test is arranged at the end of treatment.
New, clear growth should be visible at the base of the nail within around four weeks. However, nails grow slowly — approximately 1mm per month, which can be reduced by up to 50% when infected — so full recovery is a gradual process. Small nails typically take around six months; larger nails can take nine to twelve months to look completely normal.
Yes. Beyond the cosmetic impact, untreated fungal infections can be contagious and painful, and if the infection causes a break in the skin, bacteria can enter and cause cellulitis — a potentially serious condition. We recommend treating the infection as early as possible, as milder cases require fewer sessions and respond more quickly.

This powerful combination approach delivers outstanding outcomes time and time again.”

What Patients Say
“My toenails looked horrible. They were yellow, thick, painful and smelly. I was embarrassed to let anyone see them. I would always wear socks or shoes and would never wear open shoes in the summer. To be honest, it really got me down. I got treated at The Hartland Clinic, and my nails are back to normal, completely cured, and life is good again.”
