Knee osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK, affecting an estimated 5.4 million people. This condition, also known as degenerative joint disease of the knee, is characterised by a progressive loss of articular cartilage. The deterioration of this protective cartilage can lead to joint pain, stiffness, and mobility issues, severely impacting your quality of life.

In 2021, Arthrosamid® Injections were introduced in the UK as a new, non-surgical treatment for knee osteoarthritis. The Hartland Podiatry Clinic is among the select few clinics in the UK that offer Arthrosamid® Injections. This guide provides all the information you need about Arthrosamid® Injections, offering valuable insights for those exploring treatment options for their knee osteoarthritis.

What is Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid® is a hydrogel consisting of water and polyacrylamide. This substance can hold large amounts of water while maintaining its structure, making it an excellent treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Arthrosamid® is an intra-articular polyacrylamide hydrogel injection (IPAAG). It is a non-biodegradable single-dose injection that delivers long-acting treatment to adult patients with knee OA. Its flexibility, due to its large water content, is similar to natural tissue.

How do Arthrosamid® Injections Work?

Once Arthrosamid® is injected into your knee cavity, it restores the consistency of the synovial fluid (lubricating fluid in your knee), improving lubrication and cushioning. It also integrates into the synovium (lining of your inner joint capsule), creating a cushion-like effect and blocking inflammation pathways that can cause knee pain.

What is the Arthrosamid® Injection Procedure?

Arthrosamid® is administered as a single injection into the knee’s intra-articular cavity by a qualified specialist at The Hartland Podiatry Clinic in Wantage, Oxfordshire.

Procedure Steps:

  1. Cleaning: Your knee is cleaned before the injection.
  2. Anesthesia: A local anesthetic is administered.
  3. Injection: Arthrosamid® is injected using a needle, guided by ultrasound to locate the intra-articular cavity.
  4. Post-Injection: The needle is removed, and a plaster is placed over the injection site.

You may experience some pain relief within 24 hours, but it can take 4 to 12 weeks to feel the maximum benefits. Most patients start to feel an effect within a few weeks. One Arthrosamid® injection can improve pain and stiffness for up to 3 years (or longer).

Post-Procedure Care:

  • You may leave immediately or rest until you feel ready to go.
  • Your knee may feel uncomfortable as the anaesthetic wears off.
  • Symptoms may include mild to moderate pain and/or swelling at the injection site.
  • If your knee becomes red, hot, swollen, or more painful, contact the injecting physician immediately.
  • Continue regular medication and painkillers as normal.
  • Avoid strenuous weight-bearing activities (e.g., running, tennis, long walks) for 14 days. Consult your doctor on gradually resuming activities.

Benefits of Arthrosamid® Injection

Arthrosamid Injections offer several benefits compared to other knee osteoarthritis treatments:

  • Non-Surgical: Minimally invasive and easier to recover from.
  • Long-Lasting: Effects can last up to three years (or longer).
  • Pain Relief: Initial pain relief within 24 hours, with maximum benefit in 4 to 12 weeks.
  • Improved Joint Function: Reduces pain and swelling, enhancing mobility.
